There are many varieties of fasteners, one of which is the rivet machine which can be used for a type of different applications. The process of riveting machine dates back to the days before welding and the use of bolts were common in construction. Lots of old bridges scattered across the world are still functioning with their original rivet machines. There are many varieties of rivet-type fasteners each of which is employed for a certain purpose; however it is pop rivet machines that we are most interested in here.
The expression 'pop rivet machine' has a particular ring to it that sounds like the noise a riveting machine makes. Incidentally, you will need a special riveting machine in order to successfully crush the buck-tail of any variety of rivet machine so that it holds the two construction surfaces in place and this goes for all rivet-types, not just pop rivet machines. This last mentioned kind of rivet machine is also usually referred to as a blind rivet machine and is not as capable of bearing heavy loads as other varieties of rivet machines. It is 'blind' because the riveting machine is done from the one side whilst the other remains unseen.
Pop rivet machines have something called a 'mandrel' in the middle which is the portion that expands when it is fixed and then snaps off at the end. One of the problems with these rivet-types is that the mandrel is susceptible to loosening due to vibrations. If the mandrel falls out, the rivet machine will be hollow inside and therefore not quite strong and as a result of the mandrel this rivet-type tends to rust more easily.
