A single acting cylinder is an engine where the fluid works on one side only

　　It functions on the basis of the weight of other cylinders, or the movement of a wheel, which enables to drive the piston back in other direction.

　　These type of cylinders are usually found in reciprocating engines. They are universal in internal combustion engines (e.g. petrol and diesel engines) and are also utilized in several external combustion engines like, sterling and steam engines. They can also be found in pumps and hydraulic rams.

　　It is a common scenario to find some disorder in the functioning of the single cylinder. In this the oil pressure functions directly from the end of the rod where there is no piston. Whereas, a cylinder with a piston can have a rod of any size and the force can be planned or controlled by the design of the piston. A single acting container lacks the force and the space for the rod to function.

　　In a double acting cylinder, there is less surface area for the piston and the rod to function. Due to this the closing power is always less than the opening power.
