　　This cylinder acquires its energy from pressurized hydraulic fluids. It contains a cylinder barrel, where a piston is connected to a piston rod that moves back and forth. The barrel is shut from every end with the cylinder bottom and cylinder head (where the piston rod comes out of the cylinder). The piston contains sliding rings and seals.

There are a number of other machines that are used for this purpose, one being a single acting cylinder. It carries out heavy duty mechanical tasks that cannot be completed without human intervention.

　　A single acting cylinder is a mechanical device that is uni-directional. In this cylinder, the oil can only be used from one side of the piston. To perform the concerned activities, an external force is used in the form of gravity or a spring, or any other form of hydraulic cylinder from the opposite direction.
